about Stefano
Stefano Pilato (Livorno, 1965) is a visual artist based in Tuscany. Since 1993 he has developed the Fresh Fish project, focusing on assemblages made from reclaimed and discarded materials, especially wood collected along the shoreline. His works often depict marine creatures, giving new dignity and poetic value to objects that have already lived a previous life. Alongside his artistic practice, he works as a freelance designer and collaborates on urban and socially engaged art projects.
THE CONCEPT
Among the products developed through the collaboration with Stefano, the Pesce Fresco collection stands out: versatile objects that can be displayed on the wall as small decorative sculptures and, when turned over, used as chopping boards or brought to the table as food presentation pieces. Stefano’s practice is rooted in collecting reclaimed materials, especially pieces of wood found along beaches. Drawing on dedication, irony, and a background in graphic and pictorial disciplines, he creates assemblages that often take the form of marine creatures.
Made from objects that have already lived a previous life, his works restore dignity and value to discarded materials, revealing a hidden aesthetic.
This research extends beyond sculpture to include installations, lamps, mirrors, functional objects, and large-scale urban projects created in collaboration with other artists and local art associations. His work balances intuition and method, instinct and design experience, ultimately driven by the pleasure of hands-on making and the transformation of waste into poetic form.
